When is the Right Time to Transition into Robotic Packaging?

In what size plant do you typically see robotic packaging solutions Does the size/output of the plant matter when deciding to transition to robotics?

When transitioning into robotic packaging the size/output of plant is relative however it varies from company to company on when that move into automation will result in the best ROI.

What are some footprint considerations a manufacturer should think about when deciding on installing robotics on their packaging lines?

Robotic automation will take up more floor space than people hand packing but not by much and the returns are typically worth the additional space needed.

What are some common questions about robotic packaging systems and what are some of the ways you explain the benefits?

How will robotic packaging affect my OEE?

By robotically automating one or more elements of the assembly or packaging line, manufacturers can increase productivity and OEE while enjoying a low total cost of operation (TCO) and quick return on investment (ROI).

Are robots better than people hand packing?

Robots don’t take breaks/vacations and are not prone to injuries. Adding Robotic packaging can reduce on the job injuries of people.

How is my QC (quality control) affected by having less eyes on the line?

When removing people from a line you are removing a natural QC that happens when hand packing. This absolutely needs to be considered and systems need to be put in place to handle these QC checks. Moreover, vision robots equipped with machine vision system can also provide inspection & quality control on finished products, which can be more accurate and consistent than manual inspections.

How can robotics alleviate issues with the workforce?

Increased labor shortages are affecting many manufacturing companies today. Higher wages and depleted workforces are contributing to a growing need for automation.

What are some of the pros and cons of robots vs. manual product handling for pick and place packaging?

Benefits include increased efficiency throughout the production line, reduced waste by automating product loading, handling, and package inspection, maximized valuable human resources and reduced personal injury to workers by eliminating repetitive motion. The only con that comes to mind when moving to robotic packaging is the additional floor space needed to automate.

What additional resources are needed to operate and maintain a robotic machine in a packaging line?

No additional resources are needed. In most cases less resources are required.

How are production speeds affected?

Increased throughput is often a benefit of robotic packaging. Increases can be realized by the robot’s ability to pack multiple cases at one time.
